Some images of a fabulous week of advanced training with two extraordinary women: Dominique Cardon, historian, researcher and author of several reference books on natural dyes; and Sandrine Rozier, a costume designer and creator, a pioneer practitioner of natural dyes, with an absolutely wild experience

If natural dyeing looks like cooking, it’s because we are indeed cooking: colour magic!
We practised experimental archaeology by recreating dyes on wool cloth from 18e century dyers Antoine Janot and Paul Gout notebooks of recipes and samples. These are documents that Dominique has been studying and we actually got to not only see them but also to compare our samples with the 18e century’s originals attached in the notebooks. Dominique opened up the doors of the Herault archives so that we could view the 18e c. notebooks, what a vertiginous treat!

At the end of the training, another last look at Paul Gout’s notebook and a check of our production.. we did well!

Dominique and Sandrine’s generosity in sharing their bottomless knowledge, history, histories and techniques was a truly dreamlike experience.
